[ That... is not the answer he was hoping for, and he frowns at the words, trying to breathe through them. It had to be somewhere, right? It couldn't have just gotten up and walked off on its own. There's no need to explain when his fingers just start typing out of sheer instinct. ]
I can't find it. [ Just seeing that in print is enough to make his eyes burn. ]
I don't remember taking it off, and I've looked everywhere.
[ And that's all he can manage for a few minutes because he's gotten up to look through everything for the second, third, fourth time. Yuuri rubs at his eyes to keep himself from crying. It's fine. Everything will be fine. ]
[ Viktor spends those minutes running home, Makkachin panting happily thinking it's a game. He's breathing heavily with the run by the time he makes it inside, not even glancing at his phone in his focus to make it back as quickly as possible. ]
[ He's given up after finding nothing again, and Viktor will find him sitting in the middle of the floor with his hands in his lap as he stares at them. Yuuri curls his fingers, the tension visible in the line of his shoulders even as he shakes his head. ]
I really must have... [ It's a mumble, tears welling up. ] I think I lost it.
[ Makkachin comes trotting over the minute she sees Yuuri, sniffing into his face and licking his neck softly. Yuuri just looks so small and lost sitting like that on the floor that Viktor had to pause while his heart sunk somewhere down to his knees.
His dog might have gotten there first, but Viktor is moving only a moment later behind her, kneeling down next to Yuuri to pull him in a hug, rubbing his shoulders. (Makkachin just moves to the other side of Yuuri when Viktor shifts her out of the way.) ]
No way, it's just misplaced for the moment. We'll find it together.
[ Yuuri appreciates Makkachin's warmth, though the touch he gives her is mostly automatic—like he isn't really able to acknowledge her. And when Viktor kneels to hug him, he feels worse somehow. He's more responsible than this, especially with things that mean so much to him, and that ring, aside from being a physical representation of the promises they've made to each other, was the only thing he had left from home. He doesn't want to cry, but he can't help it, eventually letting his hands curl into Viktor's clothes to hold him closer. ]
But it's not here. [ There's the slightest tremor in his voice. ] Where are we going to look?
[ Viktor just hugs him all the tighter, and Makka flops her head onto Yuuri's lap, sensing she needs to give her person's person some comfort. ]
Maybe upstairs? It could have fallen out of a pocket when you were looking through them and rolled under the bed or dresser or something. When did you notice it missing? Have you done laundry since then?
[ He pulls back only the tiniest bit so he can look into Yuuri's face, tilting Yuuri's chin up so their eyes meet. ]
[ Yuuri doesn't fight the touch, looking at him despite how wet his eyes are beneath his glasses, and even though he knows that everything Viktor says is meant to comfort him, he still doesn't feel good about this. How could he have lost something he rarely takes off? How would he have missed it if it was actually still in the house? Besides, he'd probably torn their bedroom apart first... ]
But I looked in all those places, Viktor. What if it slipped off when I went out? Maybe... [ He honestly can't remember if it had been missing for long or not, and there's a quiet sniffle. ] Maybe I could have missed it somewhere.
[ Yuuri tries to smile back, but it just feels flat on his face, one hand resting atop Viktor's and the other petting idly at Makkachin's head. Being in this place always makes him feel so tired. Still, he's determined to try to find his ring. ]
Where should we look first? [ There's no way to prepare Viktor for the mess he's made of their house, but they can tackle it together. ]
[ All he does is nod, feeling a bit numbed to the situation despite Viktor being there and reassuring him that they'd find his ring. He knows it's not the worst thing, but... Yuuri's clinging hard to it for so many reasons, pulling the other man with him up the steps even as Makkachin rushes up to the top first. If he hadn't been so upset, it could be an entirely different reason they're going up here, and even through how upset he is, he feels the start of a flush at the timing of the thought. That they're together should be enough, and for the most part, it is. Still... ]
I already checked our room, but I could have missed it. [ Also, he is preemptively sorry for the mess, which is evident in the hurricane that's become their bedroom. ]
Mmm, since we spend most of our time in the house there if not the living room.
[ If he catches either the flush on Yuuri's cheeks or the direction of his thoughts, Viktor gives no indication as they climb the steps, just holding firmly onto Yuuri's hand to give him reassurance. He does smile more broadly once they step through the doorway to their bedroom and see the disaster awaiting him. ]
Wow! I guess this while give us a reason to reorganize and clean too!
[ Viktor teases gently, trying to make light of it. He squeezes Yuuri's hand briefly before letting go, moving to start looking under the bed and by the nightstands. ]
[ He knows he's teasing, and usually, he wouldn't mind it so much. But it doesn't really help, pausing for a second before he takes to the other side of the room to start sorting through some of the clothes he'd pulled out of the closet. It really makes no sense for it to be there, and still, he checks all the pockets and folds each piece of clothing when he doesn't find the ring inside. This goes on until he's neatly put everything away and sits on the edge of the bed. ]
It's not in here... [ It's said with some finality, pressing his hands against his face. Yuuri's doing his best not to cry, but the very real fact his ring is nowhere in the house is becoming more apparent. ] I don't know where it could be. I was wearing it today.
[ Viktor spent his time looking at and under and in all the nooks and crannies of their room, even going so far as to pull off the sheets of the bed carefully (they could use a wash anyway). ]
Maybe it slipped off in the bathroom? When's the last time you remember seeing it?
I, um... [ He goes to twist at the finger his ring would normally be on, stopping himself mid-way when he realizes that nothing's there. ] Before my shower. I took it off, and put it there. [ He points to the nightstand closest to the bathroom, where he distinctly remembers setting it before he dashed into the shower. It's a good thing they don't have the luxury for baths right now, or who knows how long it would have been missing before he'd even noticed. ] I should have kept it on.
[ Because it's not like he takes it off any other time for fear of tarnishing it, and it only makes sense that he's to blame. ]
[ Viktor waves off that shoulda-coulda-woulda, making his way into the hallway to head to the bathroom, his gaze looking downward just in case it rolled. ]
I take mine off sometimes for cleaning too, it's no big deal.
[ He's passing by one of the empty rooms they don't use on the way to the bathroom; Viktor wanted to use them for storage when he started to gather promotional items for them when he was playing hard at Coach slash Manager a few months back, but Yuri yelled at him since new imPorts could be assigned to their house at any moment. He'd left the extra rooms closed to resist temptation to just dump stuff inside so he does a double-take when he finds the door partly open. ]

A fresh pair of eyes looking couldn't hurt though, right? And if it did slip off outside, we'll just retrace your steps.
